At the foundation of being able to develop ANY EI skills, a person must be able to sharpen their skill of self-awareness. It is important to watch out for our ego’s natural defensiveness that would say, “Oh! I am self-aware” and realize the challenge of self-awareness is recognizing our blind spots, pet shortcomings, and justifiable low EI activity. It is DIFFICULT to truly be self-aware. If self-awareness doesn’t feel challenging, you’re likely not digging deep enough. &nbsp;EI Strength builder – Try Daily Reflection: Allocate time each day to reflect on your emotional responses and interactions. Journaling can be a powerful tool here. Ask yourself: What emotions did I experience today? How did they impact my decisions and interactions? What emotions were useful and what emotions caused me to be less of a great leader than I would like?</li><li>Embrace Empathy Beyond Traditional Boundaries Empathy is another core skill of EI. In the past, leadership boundaries were often rigid, with little room for personal conversations or emotional connection. Leaders were encouraged to maintain distance, avoiding personal matters to keep professionalism intact. However, modern leadership shifts this perspective—empathy encourages leaders to move beyond these traditional boundaries by engaging with the whole person. Leaders are now more open to understanding their team members’ personal lives, struggles, and cultural backgrounds. While empathy requires crossing these once-strict lines, it’s essential to still maintain healthy emotional boundaries, ensuring leaders provide support without overstepping or losing focus on the bigger organizational goals. EI Strength builder – Empathy in Action: Practice active non-judgmental listening during one-on-one conversations. Instead of planning your response while others are speaking, focus entirely on understanding their perspective. Use phrases like, “I hear you saying…” to check that you have heard correctly and to honor their feelings and thoughts even if you do not understand or agree. Hearing isn’t about agreement—it’s about understanding another person’s reality and perspective.</li><li>Navigate Conflict with Emotional Intelligence Conflict is inevitable in any leadership role, but how you handle it can make a huge difference. Often leaders have taken a pass on dealing with conflict by “empowering” whoever has the conflict to “work it out”. &nbsp;The purpose of leadership is to remove obstacles that our team is struggling to resolve. It does not mean rescuing them, but it does mean not being afraid of conflict, and understanding conflict represents a gap that needs support and attention. &nbsp;As leaders, it is important to see conflict as red flags and lean even more into our EI strengths to not get triggered or engaged in the emotion of the conflict but rather to rise about it ourselves and help others to rise above to see the themes, gaps, and issues to find the common ground, goal and solutions. &nbsp;EI Strength builder – Conflict Framework: When faced with conflict, use the SCARF model (Status, Certainty, Autonomy, Relatedness, Fairness) to assess and address emotional triggers. For instance, if someone feels their status is threatened, acknowledge their contributions, and find ways to affirm their value. Use this to “de-SCARF” someone so that from everyone’s “executive briefing center” of their brain, new solutions can be found.</li><li>Balance Empathy with Results One of the critical challenges leaders face is balancing empathy with the drive for results. Finding this balance is not only possible but essential for effective leadership. Empathy is about understanding and seeing people as human. Results are about accountability, communication, and actions. High EI leaders do not sacrifice results in order to have empathy. They have empathy while holding the results and seek to find the both-and way to ensure compassion for the person and results of the job both happen. &nbsp;EI Strength builder – Results with Empathy: Set clear goals but also check in on your team’s well-being. For example, after setting a challenging target, follow up with a conversation that focuses on support and understanding their challenges. This approach helps maintain motivation and trust.</li><li>Develop Emotional Agility Emotional agility is our ability to manage our emotions effectively AND adapt to changing circumstances. In today’s fast pace of business and change, we must be agile. This isn’t about erratic changes; it’s about staying calm, centered, and wise to navigate tough challenges to adapt and stay in flow toward the bigger picture. &nbsp;Rigidness, emotional meltdowns, and a lack of ability to adjust are low EI versus growing the skill of leading well, being clear and directed but recognizing when adjustment is needed, and doing it with grace, communication, and a level head. &nbsp; EI Strength builder – Practice Agility: Incorporate techniques like mindfulness or breathing exercises to stay grounded during stressful situations. When you feel overwhelmed, pause, and use a tool like the Heart Math Meditation to gain insight into your emotional state and adjust your approach accordingly.</li><li>Empowering Teams through Emotional Intelligence Finally, as leaders we are developing EI so we handle ourselves better and also it is critical to EI to empower our teams. Leaders who demonstrate emotional intelligence can create a more engaged and resilient workforce in contrast those with low EI tend to demotivate, discourage, and devalue their team. They “accidentally” send messages to the team that causes them to feel unseen, frustrated, and in conflict about the investment they make in their work and the company. &nbsp;When leaders are using EI to empower their teams, not only have they used empathy to see the whole person or are engaged to support a team member through conflict, but they are being a critical center to create safety, trust, and well-being among the team. When this safety is present, people can take risks, fail forward, learn, and grow. They are more open and can grow their own EI rather than needing to protect and hide from low EI activity and impact. EI Strength Builder – Empowerment Strategies: Regularly solicit feedback from your team about how they’re feeling and how you can better support them. Use their input to make informed decisions that balance organizational goals with their needs. </li></ol>By integrating these strategies, you can deepen your understanding and skills of emotional intelligence in your leadership. Remember, the journey to mastering EI is ongoing, and it involves consistent practice and reflection. The areas of our weakest EI take the most work and the longest to develop. Our egos are always tempted to go for what feels easy, while in the areas that feel hard, our egos will minimize their importance or value. As summer winds down and fall begins to take shape, many leaders are emerging from a season of irregularity. Vacations, disrupted routines, and the natural ebb and flow of summer create a natural neglect and disruption of systems and processes. As we shift into fall, I find many leaders are ready or need a fall reset to refresh, and refocus to get solid momentum and results for the rest of the year. In the fall things start to pick up with more conferences, &nbsp;financial pressures to finish the year strong, customer needs and team requests as everyone gets back into the grind of work, life, school, etc.An interesting concept is that of periodicity. It is the natural seasons of nature, sports, work, and life. September is one of those seasons where people shift out of the summer zone where they crave sun and downtime, and into fall where people cozy up and settle down to move things forward and have a productive fall. The environmental connections can be subtle and subconscious, but they all play a part in shifting our energy and mode.In the USA, things like a cooler day (regardless of where you live), the announcement of “Pumpkin Spice Lattes” from Starbucks, the kids going back to school, the sports schedule coming out, the looming budget review and planning, new hires being onboarded after summer, etc. Some things happen more naturally in the fall that all contribute to shifting us into this next season.It is natural to feel out of sorts as past routines are not quite working. It is natural and common. Rather than just pushing through it, a FALL RESET is a strategic and sage approach to quickly regaining traction and getting momentum for the fall.<h3>10 habits high-performing leaders use to create their fall reset:</h3><ol><li>Revisit Your Goals and Set a Fall Focus&nbsp; Before diving into the demands of the season, take time to revisit your annual goals. What have you accomplished so far this year (celebrate it!)? What’s still on your radar that needs attention before the year ends? Identify 1-2 key objectives for the fall and align your daily actions with these goals. High-performing leaders know that having a clear direction is essential for making the most of their time. Pro Tip: Write your goals down where you can see them daily. Review them each morning to stay grounded in what matters most.</li><li>Audit and Refresh Your Systems&nbsp; Summer can leave systems neglected and processes in disarray. Whether it’s your calendar, project management tools, documents, desk, or communication flows, now is the time to audit and refresh. High-performing leaders streamline their systems to save time and boost efficiency. Clear out the clutter—both physical and digital—so your systems work for you, not against you. Reflection: What systems are feeling most ineffective? What needs to be cleaned up and purged and where can you clean up processes to make your workday smoother?</li><li>Eat the Frog First: Prioritize Your Hardest Task&nbsp; Start each day by tackling your “frog”—the most important, and often the most difficult, task on your list. These are the ones that we procrastinate, and they stay on the list day after day. They are stealing your energy. Identify this “frog” the night before and prioritize it as the first thing you do in the morning. Give yourself 30 minutes a day for your frog. This simple habit boosts momentum and prevents procrastination from slowing you down. You will have more energy if you do this. Promise. Reminder: Don’t look at email or small tasks before doing your frog —focus on the frog, then move on.</li><li>Establish Powerful AM and PM Routines&nbsp; Routines are a high-performing leader’s best friend. Your morning sets the tone for the day, and your evening closes the day. Begin each morning with structured AM habits, like tackling your frog, reading daily inspiration, and reviewing your goals. In the evening, clear your desk, review your progress, and plan for the next day. Once you get the hang of this, consider having separate AM and PM routines for personal and work time. This helps you start and end both parts of your day with intention. &nbsp;Your AM routine might look like this: Frog. Read inspiration. Send an encouragement note. Review goals. Drink a glass of water. Then check your email.</li><li>Declutter Your Physical and Digital Space&nbsp; A cluttered space leads to a cluttered mind. High-performing leaders know that clear environments foster focus and productivity. Take time to declutter your workspace—clear your desk, organize your files, and tidy up your digital systems. You’ll feel more energized and ready to focus on what truly matters. Action Step: Block 15 minutes at the end of each day to clean and organize your desk and files. (add to your PM habits)</li><li>Refocus with Deep Work and Task Batching&nbsp; Leaders are often pulled in many directions, but the key to high performance is focus. Dedicate blocks of time to deep work—uninterrupted focus on your most critical tasks. Task batching, or grouping similar activities together, helps streamline your efforts. Protect these deep work times fiercely. In the fall (or any season of reset) it is important to revisit your time buckets (your main 5-7 areas of work) and adjust. Reflection: What are your time buckets, how much time do you need for each and when will you do them? Make a block schedule for the week.</li><li>Schedule Breaks and Protect Your Flex Time&nbsp; As the demands of the fall season ramp up, it’s essential to manage your energy as well as your time. Schedule short breaks throughout the day to recharge, at minimum block your lunch time. Working through lunch is a recipe for a slow energy slide. Build in flex time for unexpected tasks or last-minute priorities (usually 2 hours a day). High-performing leaders know that without space to breathe, burnout becomes inevitable. Tip: Don’t wait until you’re exhausted to take a break. Plan them into your day, just like meetings. This is the secret to true resilience – breaking before you crash.</li><li>Delegate Strategically&nbsp; You can’t do everything—and you shouldn’t try. Fall is a great time to assess what tasks are most important for you today verse what would be better to delegate to others. Whether it’s routine administrative work or parts of larger projects, find the areas where others can step in, allowing you to focus on higher-level strategy. This isn’t about dumping your least favorite tasks; it’s about identifying who can complete them more efficiently and with automation in mind. &nbsp;Pro Tip: Start by delegating small tasks that eat up time and aren’t in your zone of genius. Pay attention to what you want to delegate but know you are just avoiding and know YOU need to do it and make that a FROG.</li><li>Refresh Your Environment for Inspiration&nbsp; High-performing leaders understand the importance of their environment. This fall, refresh your workspace to create a place that energizes and inspires you. Add elements that spark creativity and motivation, like plants, new artwork, or simply a new layout. An inspiring environment can make a huge difference in your mindset and productivity. Sometimes this is updating your vision board, goals, office picture, etc. Create a space you want to be and love working. Action Step: Make one change to your office this week that sparks joy or inspiration.</li><li>Set Clear Boundaries for Work and Rest&nbsp; Fall can feel like a sprint, but highly effective leaders know that boundaries are key to sustainable success. Set clear boundaries between your work and personal life. When your workday is done, leave work behind. Prioritize time to recharge—whether that’s weekends off, time with family, or activities that help you reset mentally and emotionally. Reflection: How is your mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual (passion) energy? Based on what is draining you, what boundaries can you set this fall to refuel your energy?</li></ol>By adopting these 10 habits for a fall reset, leaders can boost productivity, refresh their mindset, and create the space they need to lead effectively. Fall is the perfect time to reflect, refocus, and refresh—not just for yourself, but for your entire team. By creating a high-performance workday, you can expand your time, increase efficiency, and leave room for both success and enjoyment.<h3>Top 10 Steps to a High-Performance Workday</h3><ol><li>Plan your week with peak energy in mind: Start by planning your entire week. Identify when you have the most energy and focus each day, and align your most critical tasks during these times to maximize productivity. Thing about “block planning” that teachers do, or you had in school. Plan your week with “blocks” of time for your key responsibilities and top areas of focus.</li><li>Schedule activities, including breaks: Time blocking is key. Schedule tasks, from meetings and projects to breaks, travel, and quiet work time. This helps prevent overscheduling and keeps your day balanced. While it can be overwhelming to have every minute scheduled, think of it more as creating “buckets” of time to support your focus. The details within that time can be more dynamic. The “buckets/blocks” are just holding bins to collect emails, tasks, projects, calls, and whatnot so that you can work efficiently in that time and ensure getting to all priorities. White space does matter, which is why you want to include blocking lunch (to make sure you take it), breaks, and even ideally, 2 hours of “flex” time for the unexpected and emergencies.</li><li>Group similar activities together: Use task batching to streamline your work. Group similar activities—like making calls, responding to emails, and preparing reports—into dedicated time blocks for better focus.</li><li>Tackle your most important task first: High performers prioritize. Start your day by addressing the biggest, most important task. I like the Brain Tracy concept of “FROG TIME” and “eating” one frog (whatever you are procrastinating) each day. This boosts momentum for the rest of the day.</li><li>Break down large projects into manageable chunks: For big projects, create smaller, actionable steps. After completing each step, switch to a different task or take a short break to keep your energy up and avoid burnout. Check your to-do list. Is it actionable items or projects? Projects on to-do lists often create overwhelm and shut down because they are simply too big. Write the steps, not the project.</li><li>Reward yourself for completed tasks: Celebrate wins. Use mini-rewards—like a coffee break, a short walk, or a healthy snack—to give yourself a boost after finishing key tasks.</li><li>Stay flexible and adjust your schedule as needed: Be adaptable. High-performance leaders know that unexpected changes are inevitable, so they stay flexible and adjust their schedules without losing momentum. Another trick with blocks is if you missed a block or need to go to an unexpected meeting you SWAP that time with your “flex” block of time. The “block plan” helps to create structure but like teachers and school dynamics, if there was a fire drill during the English block, you still have English, &nbsp;you just flex it to another time to fit it in. By taking a little step each day creates significant long-term progress.</li><li>Delegate tasks when possible: Don’t try to do everything yourself. Delegate tasks that others can handle so you can focus on the work that truly requires your attention and expertise. Remember if you are delegating, do that before you start your tasks to give others time to work your projects into their day. Also, remember everyone has “toilet scrubbing” work (work they don’t like to do). Delegation is for things others can do better or faster than you, while you are doing things you can do better or faster than others and match the level of work you need to be doing. You don’t delegate filing because it is below you, you do delegate filing if you are doing that to procrastinate an important action you need to be doing and you do delegate filing if it is a reoccurring task that someone that supports you can automate and streamline.</li><li>Keep interactions brief yet positive: Efficient communication is essential. Offer a kind word or compliment to those you interact with, then move on to your next task. This fosters positive relationships without sacrificing time. Communication is becoming more important as the volume of change, complexity and the noise around us increases, and so does miscommunication so frequent communication is useful for clarity, focus, and staying in alignment.</li><li>Close the day by resetting for tomorrow: End your day by clearing your desk, reviewing the next day’s schedule, and leaving work at the office. A clean space and a clear plan set you up for success the following day. Plus while you don’t want to take mental and emotional homework home with you, when you make a plan for the next day and have your outline and calendar in mind, your subconscious mind will be working on it and organizing so when you get to it the next day you can move quicker.</li></ol>A high-performance workday isn’t about perfection—it’s about being intentional and strategic with your time. Steps like this can increase productivity, improve focus, and create more time for the things that matter most, both in and out of the office. What do you do to optimize your workday and time?
